Description of Metabraille
Metabraille is a mobile Braille keyboard. This keyboard can be used to control smartphones and PCs remotely via Bluetooth. It is designed for use and installation by people with visual impairments or blindness. Metabraille was developed in a participatory design thinking process. During implementation, people with visual impairments or blindness were given access to Make(r)spaces and digital manufacturing techniques.
Description of open source hardware
Open source design enables the production of customized small batches, such as those needed for aids for people with disabilities. These require a high degree of creativity and customization, which is often not sufficiently covered by industrial mass production. By sharing knowledge, individual needs can be addressed, these collaborations enable a more efficient and less recourse-intensive way of meeting individual needs. The CERN-OHL-S-2.0+ license used for this project allows the use, study, improvement, imitation and exploitation of the hardware and its blueprints. It requires attribution to preserve the work as public domain. This enables collaborative design and resource-efficient, local production.
